Storm, Reflective

July 9th, 2008

It’s been a while since I staged a photo shoot, most photos I’ve taken recently are either capturing events as they occur or reference photos for my illustration. But I was doing some free associations to come up with ideas and thinking about how beautiful Storm is led to thinking about her vanity led to thinking about mirrors led to figuring out how I could do a photo with Storm and a mirror.

In the end, today’s Dog a Day photo required using a technique I learned in photojournalism class over 20 years ago: you put the subject in position and let them relax and get used to the camera before taking the shot. Storm just wasn’t sure what to make of the mirror, but she likes the camera and after a couple of minutes of sitting and talking to her, I got this shot. Maybe it’s just me, but I think there’s something unusually beautiful in this dog, with her long eyelashes and the contours of the fur on her face.

Remember, if you have pictures of your own beautiful dogs, contact me about how you can send them to me and I can use them as reference for drawings.
