Sketchbook Dogs

I’m feeling a bit exposed on this one, but I thought I’d give you a rare outsider’s glimpse into my sketchbook. When I talk to kids about drawing, I encourage them to get a sketchbook and treat it like a diary. It’s a place where you can go and try things without worrying what others will think. After watching a parent simply take a kid’s sketchbook and start leafing through while the kid looked on unhappily, I’ve made it a policy to keep my sketchbook mostly to myself, good and bad.

During a meeting last night, I scribbled in my sketchbook while I listened. Well, it works for me, I actually concentrate better when I’m doing this. So here are some ideas I was playing with for poses, some better than others. As I said, I’m allowed to fail and experiment in the book. You’re seeing the whole page, I actually discovered I’d hit the edge and was mad at myself that I couldn’t keep drawing that one dog. Perspective and anatomy problems abound. Erasure marks are evident.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how I brainstorm drawing ideas. Now I’m going to close up that sketchbook again keep it personal and safe.
