Drawing a Stupid Dog

Last night I found that a cartoonist I love, Kyle Baker, has published his new book How to Draw Stupid. It’s been out since late summer, so I guess I’ve been too busy drawing dogs to notice such things. And so, with only a cursory glance at the rich material inside, I’ve drawn a stupid dog based on the book’s tips.

The book isn’t just about drawing stupid looking characters… it’s about character creation and conveying emotion and action and about how to be funny and how to avoid not being funny. But for now, I’ve looked at his tips on making a character look stupid and here’s the result. I plan to really dig into the book once I get a bit more time. Which is looking like next year at this point. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

Any similarity between this image and Storm’s habit of sitting vacantly while a frisbee flies overhead is purely coincidental.
