His Master’s (Digital) Voice

I’m sure that this has been done by others. But I saw the HMV old-style dog and gramophone graphic today and knew I needed to do it for the digital age. If you don’t know the image, here you go:

In the UK, there’s a chain called HMV, named for His Master’s Voice. I once had an American visitor trying to work out what HMV stood for. He got as far as “Her Majesty’s” and decided not to try and finish with a “V” word.

The HMV dog, which also served as a trademark for RCA, is named Nipper. His painting, originally showing him with an Edison cylinder machine, was redone with a disk machine in the late 1890s.

Thanks to my dad for reminding me of the dog’s name, as well as some history. Maybe the official dog will have an MP3 player in the near future?
