It turns out that the Italians don’t much care for Paul Henreid. I’m not sure why. But when this film finally got an Italian (post-fascist) release, they went with a different cut. I don’t know why Michael Curtiz left Archie on the cutting room floor (you can just see him during the Knock on Wood musical number, to the left sitting at one of the tables). But the Italians took a cut featuring Archie. Don’t try to watch it, whoever dubbed Archie is the WORST. (Dedicated with all my love to my dad, who adores this film and who I hope will forgive me for this).
