Dogs, it turns out, got gas masks in the world wars. I learned that an estimated one million dogs died in World War I, which horrifies me as they just want to please us and then get sent to their deaths to fight a fight they don’t want or understand. (I know, sorry not to keep it as light as usual). I’m not at all downplaying the massive human cost and tragedy, and will spend some time thinking of those caught up in horrific circumstances. But dammit, dogs are one of the best things humans have, and to drag them to war hurts my heart.
