The dog days don’t get their name from the heat making dogs tired and lazy. They come from the belief, even mentioned by Homer in the Iliad, that when Sirius, the Dog Star, appears in the morning, it brings the hot days with it. I based the dog off a dog from an Ancient Greek mosaic, threw in the constellation, and focused the nose on Sirius. Voila. And here in Austin? It’s gonna be 104 today, give or take. Once you get close to that, a degree or three really makes little difference. We may be weeks away from it “technically” being the dog days, but they are upon us anyway.
